  • Macho Macho Man?

My sister is such a kidder.

Last Saturday, I spent time with the
family to celebrate her birthday (Oct. 14) and well as mine.
We caught up on things, exchanged birthday gifts, and had a simple but
    pleasant family lunch together.

Cue to Tuesday evening. I come home from work, open my mailbox, and get an interesting "Thank You" card from my sister!

    thanks_hello_kitty

Yeah, and here's the funny part. She wrote that she "picked out the most masculine Hello Kitty card" for me!

Call me crazy, but am I seeing a weird association with my birthday and Sanrio products? Now, if you will excuse me, I have this sudden need to grunt, eat steak, and pump some iron!

  • My Not-So Lazy Sunday

    I Run the 90's

    Finally, some blogging time!

So, it was about 3 weeks ago that I ran the Nike Run Hit Remix race. I have already blogged about this fun event in previous years,
so no need to elaborate too much on the details. The following pictures
will do nicely. But there was one thing that surprised me before the
race. I didn't expect to be running with some castmembers of the cheesy
"teen" drama, Beverly Hills 90210. Anyways, onto the pictures, graciously taken by my sister.

    out_of_the_blue

    Foolish Beat:
Debbie (now Deborah) Gibson sang the national anthem before the race,
and some of her hits as the starting gun went off. Quite a contrast to
the other hip-hop bands that were around the course!

    older_mc

    The Not-So-Young MC:
His stage was about 1/2 mile past the starting line (on the outskirts
of the Coliseum). Didn't hear his big hit, "Bust A Move" as I ran by,
but thought it was appropriate that we saw him as the first act
since he attended U$C! You might recall seeing him recently on the
reality TV show, Celebrity Fit Club 3.

    ice_ice_baby

    To The Extreme:
And here we have Robert Van Winkle (aka Vanilla Ice) droppin' verses
from his hit, "Ice Ice Baby" with a live drummer and a rougher sound.
Like Young MC, he was also recently seen on a VH1 reality series.
    What's up with that?

    fantastic_voyage

    Fantastic Voyage: Coolio
was probably the most interactive of the performers along the course.
He brought people up onto his stage to help him perform and dance. I
think it also helped that his stage was along the street with the
fraternity and sorority houses, whose residents were outside making a
    friendly ruckus.

    humpty_shock_g

"And all the rappers in top 10, please allow me to bump thee": He's
spunky, and likes his oatmeal lumpy. It's Humpty Hump from Digital
Underground, complete with his trademark glasses and big plastic nose.
(If you look real closely, you can see the Nike swoosh on his left
nostril!). I was happy that I heard the Underground perform their
famous hit "Humpty Dance" while running past their stage. But Humpty
rapped listlessly, so it was also a little disappointing.

    trugoy_dres

    After
crossing the finish line in the Coliseum, we were treated to a great
post-race concert with headliners, De La Soul. You younger ones might
know that they were the featured rappers on the Gorillaz track, "Feel
Good Inc." But, as an old school rap aficionado, I appreciated hearing,
"Me, Myself and I", and Black Sheep's "The Choice Is Yours", with Dres (in the yellow shirt) dropping in to collaborate.

    Other
than the hotter-than-average weather, it was a great race experience. I
am already looking forward to next year's race and performers.

    4th Down

    So
my day of exercise didn't end there with a 5 mile run. I had set up a
friendly touch football game with the church members following
afternoon service. (You can check out Honyock's pictures or theikedas entry
for further coverage). It's always a treat to spend time with the
undergraduates when I can. Hopefully, I can do more of these "sports
ministry" activities in the future, because it is a passion of mine. I
know that I am compensating for all those years as a kid that I wasn't
allowed to play in any Saturday team sports because of Japanese school!

    Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?

Due to my occasional, forgetful nature, I left the church office keys in Samwise's
car, who took off early from football. Unfortunately, I needed those
keys because I left all my belongings back at the church (including the
cell phone, wallet and car keys). With no one in the office, and in
proximity to provide a spare key, I walked over to the closest staff
member's home, which just happened to be theikedas. Thankfully, they
were home, and kindly invited me in to have some dinner and a sit-down.
A welcome relief, since my legs after such a long day had quite a
workout. The beef stew also hit the spot too. Thanks guys.

    I
guess their three year old son Eric was happy to see Uncle 'Kio, as he
went into show-and-tell mode and shared with me about his animal
collection. He also made me a Play-Doh mochi treat, which was great.
Such a nice kid! Maybe one of these days, I can return the favor and do
a show-and-tell for him. "Hello Eric, this is one of Uncle Akio's ramen
shops. And here is a mochi ice cream, on the house!"

  • WHERE'S AKIO?

  • I hear ya' Tony Bennett

Hey there! Too much fun stuff (and photos) to report over the past 8 days. So, I
guess I'll pitch some teaser headlines for upcoming posts. You can
speculate as to what I am referring to.

    1. My Not-So "Lazy Sunday"
    2. Kamsahamnida Cell Group: A Cut Above
    3. I Left With A Smile From San Francisco.

  • Ending on Some High Notes

Has it really been two years since our last championship? Well, with
some pleasantly unexpected roster changes, and some tweaking in our
strategy, Animal House finished on top at the Westside
Volleyball Minors divsion! Big congratulations to my teammates for
their solid play the final 3 weeks to clinch it for us! It is also nice
to go out on top as a team captain, as I will be stepping down to
concentrate more on my half-marathon training. The "pressure" is on for my successors, Stan and Stacey. Can we repeat?

"When You Care Enough to Send the Very Best"™

I can't believe it was a decade ago when I started leading a
Bible study. And now, with yesterday's cell group meeting completed (at
1 a.m. no less, thanks to Josh and some aftermath Lego Star Wars II), it
feels like things have come full circle. The cell group members gave me
a nice thank you card, and we're heading out to K-town next Wednesday to celebrate.

If you were a part of the working cell group, stop by if you wish. I would like to see you. Just send an e-mail to me.

  • Do you believe in miracles?

    YES!

Way to go Blue Crew! 4 STRAIGHT HOME RUNS in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie! And cap it off with a game-winning blast from No-MAH! Just keep hanging on to first for a couple more weeks!

  • Music Video Spotlight

I saw this music video late Wednesday night. It's so
quirky and fun, that I had to share it with you all! Enjoy and have a
    great Labor Day weekend!

OK Go - "Here It Goes Again" (2006)

  • Music makes you lose control...

Just Throw Your Hands in the Air: After finishing my customary run at Niketown last Thursday, they made an announcement
about the remaining "90's hip-hop" artists for the Run Hit Remix.
Coolio was not a surprise, as he is a local product from Compton.
The final artist was a shocker and a riot. Like to know who it is? Hang
on to your K-Fed hat! Drag your mouse in the space below to find out
(If you view my xanga in subscription format, then you should already
    see it)!

Ice Ice Baby! Yes, that's right. Vanilla Ice is scheduled to perform.

    Shout-outs Even Here:
Congratulations to my friend, phantomwest (aka Tim). Out of over 100 worldwide submissions, his New Order cover of "Doubts Even Here" won a spot on the NewOrderOnline.com compilation CD, Community 2. Here's to further success on your musical endeavors.

Taking up MySpace: I am not
known as a social butterfly, online or off. Maybe that is why it took
me so long to join that ubiquitous social network. I only opted-in
because I wanted to support my former coworker, who also does music and
    improv on the side.

I know that a lot of indie and up-and-coming bands/artists have gone
the route of obtaining a myspace page to promote their music, hoping
that a record label executive will listen and sign them to a deal.
Unfortunately, these bands/artists also bombard "friend requests" to
the rest of us as well. It's a little invasive for me, and I've had to
turn down a lot of them. Note to you guys: It really helps if you are my friend!

What? No pics this time?: Hakuna Matata people. I am experimenting with photosite Flickr and have some extra Oklahoma shots of Oral Roberts University. Enjoy.

  • Uncle 'Kio's Weekend Monologue

Ping Pong, the itch is fed: The
first UPC table tennis doubles tournament ended this past Sunday with
the championship match. Yours truly and improv wedding musician Josh
fell just short, losing the deciding third set 18-21 to undergrads
Johnny and Albert. "Not bad for the oldies", as organizer Samwise
put it. I had been wanting to have a tournament for the longest time,
but was too lazy to set one up. So I'd like to say "Thanks Sam, and
when am I going to see you out there on a Nike run"?

Google me this, Google me that:
I find it odd that a considerable amount of web traffic to this here domain is for my Orochon Ramen review that I did TWO years ago! People must want their share of good noodles. And it reminds me
that I should do more reviews. Two years and only 1 ramen joint
    crtiqued? Pathetic!

Life is a Highway (with potholes): I
just don't know what it is about my continual misfortunes with my car.
(To see the chronicles of (old) Sentra, you can check out this "bang-up" entry). I came home
late from work Saturday night and my car died about 1/4 mile away
from my apartment. Turns out it was a failure of the camshaft position sensor. I didn't mind
biking to church Sunday morning. I just didn't want to do the Tour d'El Segundo the following
Monday for my JSP programming class. Thankfully, I have my car back now.

Quality time with the(ir) kids: Since
the ping pong match was not until the conclusion of afternoon service
(I attend morning session), I spent it hanging out with the
ever-growing community of young'uns. (One couple just gave birth to a
girl early Sunday morning). Some highlight moments were 1) listening to
toddlers Eric and Krista on the staircase, wondering if a spider was on
a small web. 2) riding bikes with the pastor's kids around the church
parking lot and 3) hearing the younger kids call me "Uncle 'Kio". That
    always makes me happy.

    More photos? Sure, why not?

    trindade_beach

    Brazillian Paradise:
I took this shot from right out of my chair along the fisherman village
of Trindade. Beautiful blue water and check out the green surroundings!
Probably the most relaxing two hours out of my Brazil trip, where I
just kicked back and took in the view. The village also has a great
restaurant (Vagalume do Meio), which serves a killer fish stew.

    botanical_garden_japon

It's not that far from Tokyo:

You may be surprised to know that Brazil has one of the largest
Japanese communties in the world outside of Japan (around 1.5 million
people). Maybe that is why the Botanical Garden in Rio de Janeiro has a
    considerable Japanese area.

    favela_rocinha

Favela de Deus: This picture could only capture a part of the biggest favela in Rio de Janeiro, Rocinha. I must admit, that I had my reservations of taking a tour
around the slum, but it turned out to be quite educational and
rewarding. While the community was quite friendly, you could always
sense danger was somewhere around the corner.

  • August and Everything After

After some overtime and weekend toiling, I completed a major project
milestone (ahead of time) at work last Friday. So now it's time to
decompress a little bit. And this place could seriously use an update.

Wedding Laughers: I'm sure most of you readers attended blue
and N's excellent adventure this past Saturday. A ginormously fun time.
While I wouldn't say that N and I were the closest of friends, I felt
honored that he asked me to be his groomsman, and it was great to take
part (even standing in those uncomfortable rented shoes. But who am I
to complain? The bridesmaids were in heels!). And one humorous
anecdote: At the reception (a 10 course banquet of good eats at NBC Seafood), a wedding guest mistook me for one of the Chinese waiters. I should have went along with it and replaced her teapot!

Hanging it UP: It's official. My long tenure as a
"working/young adult" cell group leader will come to a close at the end
of September. Although it has been at times trying, I have really
enjoyed my experience and feel it is time to move in a different
direction. As to what that direction is, I am not sure yet. Stay tuned.

    Happy Blue Crew Member:
Things are currently right in my baseball world. Just when a lot of
people wrote off the Dodgers after their 1-13 tumble post All-Star
break, they pick up key ballplayers, go on an 11 game winning streak,
and make it back to first place. Even better, the rival Giants are in last, and just got SWEPT!

Me, My Sis, and Five: 2/3 of the family (sans Mom) will be participating again in the Nike Run Hit race. A lot of things are different this time around. The performing artists will consist of early 90's hip-hop acts, including Young MC, Digital Underground, and headliners, De La Soul
(I wonder if you younger readers know these guys without checking out
the Wiki links?) . And only 1 race will be run - a 5 mile course around
the University of Spoiled Children. You Westwood folk can join me on
Monday nights, 6:30 pm, for the next 6 weeks for some free training
runs, starting at the Westwood Brewing Company.

Pop-Up Akio: So, I was watching the championship match of the World Series of Pop Culture.
And I had my share of time screaming the trivia answers at the somewhat
clueless contestants. With that in mind, my "entertainment industry"
friends and I have considered trying out for the show, if it happens to
have a second season . Now if our team can somehow qualify and win the
$250K grand prize, I can find some justification for watching all that
"kudaranai" (useless) TV programs as a kid. I'm sure Mom is still
wondering how I could memorize song lyrics and TV show dialogue, yet
consistently forget my jacket at elementary school.

    Future Excursions:
    San Francisco (Sept. 30): For
the last Dodgers/Giants series. It will be my first time at the enemy's
ballpark. A repeat visit to the city may occur the following weekend
    for the 49ers/Raiders game.

Las Vegas Baby! (Dec. 10): Running the inaugural 1/2 marathon along The Strip!

Italia (May 2007?): I hope to come back as the next Masahiko Kobe.

    The Last 1000 Words: Since
you made it all the way down here, I thought I would at least reward
you with some multimedia from the country of "Ordem e Progresso".

Igreja de Sao Francisco de Assis: While in Brazil, Josh and I met up with an old church alumnus, who drove us into the colonial town of Ouro Preto. This church (above) is arguably the most famous piece of Brazilian colonial art. The entire exterior was carved by Aleijadinho (Little Cripple).

Igreja NS do Carmo: This church was built between
1766-1772. It was a group effort done by the important artists in the
area, featuring a facade done by (you guessed it), Aleijadinho.
